Non-school hours are a critical time for
youth, ages 5-17. Non-school hours can be filled with opportunities
to learn and grow, through quality non-school hour programs, or
a time of increased risk to the health and safety of our kids.
The non-school hours are the peak time for juvenile crime and
risky behaviors such as alcohol and drug use. Experts agree that
non-school hour activities offer a healthy and positive alternative.
These activities keep kids safe, improve academic achievement
and help relieve the stresses on today’s working families.
Currently:
- In the St. Louis bi-state region, nearly
three-fourths of children ages 5-13 live in households where
both parents, or a single parent, work outside the home.
- An estimated 35,000 area children and
youth are left alone and unsupervised each day once the school
bell rings.
- Only one in 10 children in the area is
consistently served by non-school hour programs.
- Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are
the most commonly used substances among students in grades six
through 12 in the St. Louis bi-state region.
- With more children growing up in homes
with two working parents or a single working parent, today’s
families can benefit from the safe, structured learning opportunities
that non-school hour programs provide.

In 2004, St. Louis for Kids received
a $100,000 federal grant from Drug Free Communities Support Program
(DFCSP) to build a region-wide coalition and directory of positive
programs and activities that offer drug-free environments for
youth.
“Happenings 4 Youth,” is a community-based
project designed to promote safe and healthy activities for youth
in the region. It is a database of community organizations and
their events suitable for youth and families. This effort to identify
and connect area youth to safe, positive alternatives will help
reduce substance abuse among, strengthen community anti-drug coalitions
and reinforce academic skills. In the end, area youth will become
more successful and productive.
